macOS still cannot browse a folder of pictures

The same question has been asked since 2009: how do I arrow through a folder the way Windows does? Apple’s three built-in answers each miss a piece.

Preview opens a file, not a folder

Open one image and that is all you get. Arrow keys do nothing. Animated GIF, WebP and APNG often do not play.

Quick Look is a glance, not a viewer

You can flip only inside Finder’s current selection. You cannot delete, it forgets zoom, and it will not go into subfolders.

Photos is a library you have to import

It does not manage pictures that live as ordinary files. Finder itself slows to a crawl on a folder of twenty thousand.

Designed around looking

The window is the picture

No title bar, toolbar or sidebar in the way. Move to an edge and the interface fades in; move away and it fades out. The picture is never covered.

Open one, browse the rest

Drop a file on Eyeit and the whole folder is ready. Arrow keys, scroll, trackpad. The next picture is instant.

  • The window never jumps

    Changing pictures never recentres or resizes the window. Your place on screen stays put.

  • Delete, undo, stay where you are

    Backspace moves to Trash. ⌘Z brings it back. Full screen does not exit. You stay on the next picture, not a hole in the list.

  • Info that stays open

    Camera, lens, exposure, GPS. Change pictures and the panel stays — it only updates. Prompts from Midjourney, ComfyUI and other AI tools sit in the same place, one click to copy.

  • The formats you actually open

    JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, TIFF, PSD, RAW and more. Animated GIF, WebP and AVIF play as you expect.

  • Zoom that respects small pictures

    Fit, actual size, fill. A 16-pixel icon is not stretched across the window. Pinch, scroll and double-click all work.

  • Instant full screen

    Return or F. No theatrical animation. Each display is independent. Trash and arrow keys keep working.

What it is not

A viewer that grows an editor stops being a viewer. Eyeit draws that line on purpose.

Not an editor

No exposure, no object removal, no upscaling. Those belong in another app. Eyeit shows the file.

Not a file manager

No folder sidebar. Open one picture, browse the folder. That is the whole model.

Not a subscription

The free core stays free. Pro is a one-time purchase when it ships. There will always be a way to buy it once.

What is Eyeit?
Eyeit is a high-performance image viewer for Mac. It is simple and practical: open one picture, browse the whole folder, and keep the interface off the image. It is also an AI image viewer — prompts, models and huge generation folders included.
When can I download it?
Not yet. The free core already runs; Pro (the ten-thousand grid, prompt search, compare) is still being built. This site will say so the day a build is ready — there is no waitlist.
Does anything leave my Mac?
No. Pictures, metadata and prompts stay on your Mac. There is no account, no analytics, and nothing is uploaded to look at a file.
Will it replace Preview?
That is the point. One click sets Eyeit as the default for JPEG, PNG, HEIC, GIF, WebP and the rest. On recent macOS versions the system asks once per format — Eyeit tells you before it asks.
Can it view AI-generated images?
Yes. Read prompts from Midjourney, ComfyUI and similar tools, search by model or seed, and browse folders of thousands of generations without waiting.
What about Windows or iPhone?
Not in version 1. Eyeit is a native Mac app first.
